Radiation Safety Specialist

Assure proper and safe use of radioactive materials by the university community by conducting radiation safety evaluations, audits and inspections and developing and administering programs that promote safe use and assure regulatory compliance. Work with investigators and researchers to promote and assure the proper and safe use of radioactive materials. Oversee and conduct radioactive materials therapy patient monitoring. Possess knowledge, skills and expertise in the use of radioactive materials.

Qualifications:
Education or Equivalency Required

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a Physical or Life Science or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.


Required Qualifications:

  • Typically, 1 year of health physics related experience.
  • Working knowledge of radiation safety instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of NRC Radiation Protection regulations, or equivalent agreement state.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, attention to detail, interpersonal, and relationship management skills, and ability to interact positively.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Possession of a valid state or commercial driver's license, and the ability to meet University Fleet Safety Standards.


Highly Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience performing hospital patient coverage after treatment with radioactive materials.
  • Radioactive materials shipping experience.
  • Certification by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technicians.
  • Working knowledge of Iowa HHS Radiation Protection regulations.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience handling hazardous (radioactive) materials.
  • Familiarity with radiation safety practices in a hospital environment.
  • Knowledge of university policies, procedures and regulations.



Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check, credential/education verification and verification of a valid state or commercial driver’s license, and ability to meet University Fleet Safety Standards. Up to 5 professional references will be requested at a later step in the recruitment process.


This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process.
