Biomedical Engineering Coordinator – Medical Center North Liberty

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Bioengineering is seeking an Engineering Coordinator to manage equipment maintenance responsibilities for standard patient care or other departments and serves as the primary contact for those areas. Responds to equipment repair and preventive maintenance inside patient rooms, care areas and at the patient's bedside when needed. Manages equipment maintenance due lists and worked with patient care staff to coordinate repair services or planned maintenance. Assists with installation, upgrade and repair projects for equipment related to their assigned areas. May respond to after-hours troubleshooting and repair calls.

Position Responsibilities:

Analysis

  • Plan and coordinate new equipment check-in for Capital Management or departmental projects
  • Determine the priority of equipment installation and direct resources to achieve project goal
  • Complete the assembly, installation and testing of new equipment for the project, utilizing additional resources when the scope or timing of the project dictate
  • Prepare old equipment for surplus or trade-in by recording equipment characteristics such as Manufacturer, Model, serial number and any existing University of Iowa identification numbers
  • Read PM procedures, gather equipment and tools to complete the work. Document maintenance performed, and parts used in the maintenance management system

Engineering Project Management

  • Capital Management/Departmental Projects
  • Assist in activation/deployment of equipment associated with project
  • Assist in inventory/tag new equipment

Compliance

  • Departmental Responsibilities
  • Assigned specific departments which may include standard inpatient and other patient care areas.
  • Manage departmental due lists
  • Confirm that all equipment meets relevant specifications, standards, and regulations and maintenance is kept up to date
  • Responsible for on-site technical support and troubleshooting

Planning

  • Departmental equipment deployments
  • Acquire new equipment lists from department
  • Tag new equipment and perform initial functional check
  • Deploy new equipment

Application of Technical Knowledge

  • Apply engineering principles such as measuring voltage, wattage, and current measurement to troubleshoot/repair medical equipment
  • Evaluate electrical or mechanical specifications of replacement parts to determine if the parts will fit the application
  • Swap and exchange system assemblies or components to identify equipment failures
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems through an understanding of equipment function and use
  • Proficient using and understanding service manuals/schematics to solve complex electronic problems with limited oversight
  • May respond to after-hours on-call support of medical equipment, escalating to supervisory personnel when additional support is needed.

Communication

  • Communicate with faculty, staff, and students to help figure out exactly what the equipment malfunction is and the best way to rectify it
  • Ability to decern if an issue is an equipment failure or user related and be able to communicate this to staff in a tactful and helpful manner

Leadership

  • Provides feedback, coaching and counseling to new Bio employees or students regarding repairs, maintenance procedures and Bioengineering shop policy/procedures
  • May have functional supervision of Engineering Associates or other personnel

Financial Responsibility

  • Analyze repair costs and present them to the owning department to help determine if they want to proceed
  • Run reports detailing service costs for specific equipment.

Pay Grade: 4B-

Salary: $65,280.00 to commensurate

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree within biomedical engineering or related technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Typically, 1-3 years of experience troubleshooting, repairing, and testing electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Experience communicating technical information effectively to technical and non-technical staff verbally and in writing.
  • Must meet the University of Iowa Fleet Services program rules and regulations, due to the ability to drive University vehicles.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working as Biomedical Equipment Technician or medical equipment field service technician.
  • Experience maintaining medical devices.
  • Experience maintaining Philips PIICiX central monitoring systems and MX series patient monitors.
  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system and equipment implementation projects.
