GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision, the Instructor/Coordinator at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC) a state correctional institution, is responsible for coordinating education services, providing on-site supervision of Kirkwood education staff, and providing instruction to incarcerated learners.  This person will serve in conjunction with the High School associate director, and Workforce Dean, as a liaison between Kirkwood and the IMCC staff, and with the Iowa Department of Corrections.  The Instructor/Coordinator will also provide on-going monitoring and evaluation of classroom instruction and curriculum, as well as input to the selection and purchase of materials, equipment, and overall programing.

The usual work hours for this position is Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Limited Term Position – Continuation of this position is contingent upon future funding from the Iowa Department of Corrections

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinate IMCC educational services and provide leadership to the IMCC educational staff.
• Represent the Kirkwood education program in collaboration with the IMCC management team, KCC High School associate director and Dean of Workforce Services, and the Iowa Department of Corrections.
• Collaborate with fellow staff to ensure program compliance with accreditation standards, reporting requirements, and policies from the Corrections Education Association (CEA), Kirkwood Community College, and the Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC.)
• Collaborate with fellow educational staff members and IMCC/DOC staff on academic schedules, instructor assignments, and programs of study
• Advise offenders regarding educational opportunities, policies, and procedures, including offender orientation and placement.
• Complete monthly, quarterly and annual reports for DOC.  
• Facilitate monitoring processes and activities with DOC and CEA.
• Perform other related work duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work.  Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, successful teaching experience is required.

  • In addition, candidates must pass IMCC security clearance and be able to graduate from the Iowa Department of Corrections Training Academy.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

A current Iowa standard teaching license is preferred but not required.  


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

• Candidates with prior corrections, adult education, or at-risk teaching experience are preferred.
• Candidates with project management and/or supervisory experience are preferred.
