According to US News and World Reports, Iowa ranks highly for its superior Infrastructure (#1), excellent Education (#5), and world-class Healthcare (#3) . As a result, Iowa claimed the top spot in their “Best States” rankings for 2018.

Iowa City stands out as a state leader in healthcare. Consequently there are always healthcare jobs in Iowa City that need skilled workers. However, you don’t have to be a doctor or a nurse to work in this industry! With a growing need for other skilled and labor positions, finding employment in Iowa City is as easy as finding the right employer.

Here are a handful of the industry leaders for employment in the Iowa City metro area:

Quality Hospitals in Iowa City

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) was ranked #48 on the Forbes list of of America’s Best Places to Work in 2018. This award-winning teaching and research facility is home to one of the nation’s largest academic medical centers. UIHC is a top spot for Iowa City employment, as it employs around 11,000 people across all locations.

The VA Medical Center is responsible for several hundred jobs in Iowa City, and it’s growing. Recently they opened a new community clinic with over 150 employees. This clinic will provide dental, lab, rehab, and other services to veterans in Iowa City’s downtown neighborhood.

Mercy Hospital Iowa City is another long time Iowa City employer. It traces its origins back to 1873. At that time, the Sisters of Mercy entered into an agreement with the University of Iowa to provide hospital services to Iowa City. They later moved on to establish their own, independent hospital in 1886. Today, Mercy Hospital provides the community with over 1300 jobs.

In addition to skilled doctors and nurses, these hospitals hire educators, therapists, facilities management, and countless other staff.

Iowa City Healthcare Innovation

Integrated DNA Technologies is an innovative biotech company based just outside of Iowa City in Coralville. Known for its production of short chains of DNA and RNA, it’s an industry leader in biomedical research.

IDx Technologies, another Coralville company, uses machine learning and AI to detect retina diseases in the eye. This automatic system measures the eye and interprets results, which speeds up the process and frees up time for technicians.

Bio-Research Products, based in North Liberty, is another local biotech company. They primarily produce enzymes for the diagnostics industry out of their facility, with extra capacity in conjunction with the University of Iowa’s Research Park.

These companies are often looking for software developers, scientists, researchers, and other support roles.

Personal Care Facilities in Iowa City

Briarwood Health Care Centers is a skilled nursing facility with 24-hour licensed nursing staff, located west of the river near Roosevelt Elementary in Iowa City. They provide rehab, long-term care, and respite services for residents and their families.

Progressive Rehab Associates has been in the business of rehab for over 25 years, across nine locations in the Iowa City area. They provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy care.

Oaknoll continues a 50-year tradition of quality “lifecare”. They provide independent living and assisted living care for its residents. In addition, Oaknoll offers therapy, social work, and companion services.

These facilities tend to hire more therapists and nurses, as well as cooks and dining staff.
